Honeycomb Testing

Honeycomb is another structural material typically made from paper, metal foil, polymer films, etc., very similar to natural honey combs. They are generally two-dimensional materials with a typical regular or near regular hexagonal cell pattern. Other patterns like triangular, square, rectangular patterns are also possible. Three-dimensional honey combs are new development, manufactured using laser technologies in polymer matrices. Most honeycombs are made using traditional adhesive bonding technologies. Some metal honey combs are produced using soldering or brazing technologies.

These materials are used generally as core materials in sandwich construction with adhesively bonded metal or polymeric face sheets. They offer some unique product performances. Light weight high stiffness and high strength performance are most noticeable in sandwich honeycombs. Other performances may be related to sound absorption, heat transport, electromagnetic radiation, etc.

Capability – At TTL, we have capability to test mechanical, physical and structural properties of honey comb panels. We also can run durability tests on honey comb panels specifically water ingress, moisture ingress properties, etc.

Some relevant standards:

  • ASTM C297 – Standard Test Method for Flatwise Tensile Strength of Sandwich Constructions
  • ASTM C364 – Standard Test Method for Edgewise Compressive Strength of Sandwich Constructions
  • ASTM C365 – Standard Test Method for Flatwise Compressive Properties of Sandwich Cores
  • ASTM C393 – Standard Test Method for Core Shear Properties of Sandwich Constructions by Beam Flexure
  • ASTM C1674 – Standard Test Method for Flexural Strength of Advanced Ceramics with Engineered Porosity (Honeycomb Cellular Channels) at Ambient Temperatures
  • ASTM D7249 – Standard Test Method for Facing Properties of Sandwich Constructions by Long Beam Flexure
  • ASTM D7336 – Standard Test Method for Static Energy Absorption Properties of Honeycomb Sandwich Core Materials

Touchstone is committed to providing its customers with quality, reliable test results. That is why we have undertaken the rigorous steps needed to meet and secure the most stringent of test lab accreditations including ISO/IEC 17025, NADCAP 7101 (Materials Test Lab) and NADCAP 7122-I (Non-Metallics Materials Testing).
